Zuni fetish carvings are small stone sculptures made by Zuni artists from the Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico, a tradition practised by the A:Shiwi people for over a thousand years. Fetishes depict animals and figures that carry spiritual significance in Zuni culture, with each animal understood to embody particular qualities. Bear fetishes represent strength and healing, wolf fetishes wisdom and guidance, mountain lion figures leadership. Materials used include turquoise, coral, serpentine, jet, jasper, travertine, malachite, pipestone, shell, bone and elk antler, often with inlaid eyes and carved heartline detail. The true Zuni fetishes remain sacred and are kept within the Pueblo. The carvings sold commercially are made by Zuni artists with the same materials and techniques, but are distinct from the ceremonial originals. Each piece in this collection is individual and handmade. Sourced on buying trips to New Mexico and Arizona.
