The contemporary Native American jewellery we stock comes directly from makers on the reservations across New Mexico and Arizona, bought on buying trips we make ourselves. Navajo makers work in sterling silver and turquoise, coral, onyx and other stones, using stamping, sandcasting and platero construction. Zuni makers are known for fine lapidary work, cutting stones into precise channel and cluster inlay, as well as carved animal fetishes set into rings and bracelets. Hopi makers use the silver overlay technique developed in the 1930s and 1940s, cutting designs drawn from Hopi pottery and textile traditions into layered sterling silver. All three traditions have been in continuous production since the late nineteenth century. The makers we buy from are working silversmiths on the reservations, and every piece is made by hand.
