This piece features inlay work, a lapidary tradition most closely associated with the Zuni people, involving stones cut and fitted into silver to create mosaic patterns, with roots that predate European contact.

This carving comes from the Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico, where the Shiwi and their ancestors have practised this tradition for multiple millennia.
