Sterling silver with Ebony.

A defining technique of Zuni silversmithing, inlay work involves stones precisely cut and fitted into silver to create mosaic patterns, drawing on stone-cutting traditions that predate European contact.

The cross carries layered meaning in Native American tradition, representing the four cardinal directions, the four sacred mountains and in some interpretations celestial bodies, with the Christian cross integrated through Spanish colonial contact in the sixteenth century.

From the William Spratling workshop in Taxco, Mexico, founded in 1931.
