Traditional Hopi Overlay, Handmade Sterling

Sterling silver.

This piece is made using the overlay technique, developed by Hopi silversmiths in the 1940s from designs drawn from pottery and Katsina traditions, with a design hand-cut from a top sheet of silver and soldered over a textured, oxidised base.

Dating from the late nineteenth to mid twentieth century, made entirely by hand using traditional techniques developed across the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi nations.
